Any drink that both Anthony Bourdain and Martha Stewart have described as an all-time favorite just has to be good, and the Caipirinha does not disappoint. Bursting with fresh lime, sweetened with just the right touch of sugar, and leveled up with a good punch of cachaça, the Caipirinha — which happens to be the national drink of Brazil — is one cocktail that proves you don't need many frills to create something truly delicious. As someone who was ordering mojitos in my 20s, I wish I was ordering these instead. My three-ingredient Caipirinha cocktail recipe makes up for lost time, however, making it incredibly easy to enjoy the Brazilian beverage on a whim.

Cachaça, a spirit only produced in Brazil, is the star of any good Caipirinha. It has a uniquely grassy flavor profile, which makes it a rather refreshing pairing with fresh lime juice. It's a nice swap if you're used to rum- or tequila-based cocktails. Sugar rounds out any intense citrus or grassy notes, resulting in a smooth, surprisingly complex drink, and one that you truly need only three total ingredients to make and enjoy.

Gather the 3 ingredients for this Caipirinha cocktail recipe

Vibrant, punchy, and refreshing, a good Caipirinha starts with the cachaça. You should be able to find cachaça at most liquor stores, and while it may be slightly pricier than your average bottle, it's worth the investment. Along with liquor, you'll need a fresh lime or two (don't even consider swapping it for bottled lime juice), and superfine sugar. The superfine sugar isn't a deal breaker. If you have standard granulated sugar, you can use that instead. Just take care to muddle the limes and sugar thoroughly to keep the drink from having granules of sugar running through. Other than that, some ice for shaking and serving is all you'll need.

Step 1: Trim the lime

Use a sharp knife to cut the ends off of the lime.

Step 2: Cut the lime into wedges

Cut the lime in half vertically, then cut each half into 3 wedges.

Step 3: Remove the pith

Cut the white pith out of the center of each wedge.

Step 4: Transfer limes and sugar to a cocktail shaker

Place the limes in a cocktail shaker along with the sugar.

Step 5: Muddle the limes and sugar

Muddle to break up the limes.

Step 6: Fill shaker with ice

Fill the shaker ⅔ of the way with ice.

Step 7: Add the cachaça

Add the cachaça.

Step 8: Shake until frosty

Shake for 15 seconds, or until the shaker is frosty.

Step 9: Strain out the cocktail

Pour the cocktail out into a rocks glass.

Step 10: Garnish and serve the Caipirinha cocktail

Garnish the cocktail with a lime slice, if desired, and serve.

What other ingredients can I add to a caipirinha?

A drink this simple doesn't inherently need any additional flavors, but if you do want to get creative, there are plenty of variations you can explore. For a fruity twist, muddle in some fresh pineapple, mango, or kiwi for a tropical touch. Crush and add watermelon during the height of the summer season, or some fresh berries for a boost in color and slightly tart flavor. A little passionfruit pulp would also be a delicious addition, or lean into seasonal touches with sliced pears, apples, peaches, or cherries, depending on what you've got ripe and ready.

For a twist on the citrus, you can use yuzu juice in the place of fresh limes if you don't have any on hand, or a combination of lime and lemon or orange wedges for a sweet-tart flavor profile. Blood oranges would add a nice pop of color as well. Fresh herbs like basil or mint would add some freshness, while fresh ginger could add a uniquely spicy kick. If you want to go all-in on the spice, muddle in some jalapeño slices.

What is cachaça, and can you make a caipirinha without it?

Cachaça is a Brazilian spirit, and it really is the heart and soul of this cocktail. Though cachaça can offer up different flavor notes depending on exactly how it was distilled (or for how long), most recognize it thanks to its distinct grassy, earthy, and somewhat sweet profile. Many people assume cachaça is simply a type of rum, and it's true that both liquors are very similar. Most rums are typically made from molasses, however, while cachaça differs in its specificity that it comes from fresh sugarcane juice, a base that makes all the difference in that final flavor profile.

All that said, if you simply can't find cachaça or don't want to invest in a new bottle, white rum will be your next best go-to if you still want to make this Caipirinha recipe. The drink won't have that distinctly earthy, vegetal flavor profile to it with plain rum, but it will still taste good. Go with tequila blanco for a hint of agave flavor, or mezcal for a little smokiness. Many types of gin offer up earthy, herbal notes of their own, so gin would also be a good swap if you still want a cocktail with a more distinct robustness to it.
