Experience

After fleeing Richmond to Virginia's rural river country in 2012, Preston found work on a cattle farm owned by the proprietors of Something Different, a country store and Southern specialty foods destination. He was quickly reassigned to the barbecue pits under the tutelage of regional culinary expert and historian, Dan Gill. He has been an acolyte in the church of smoked meat and Southern foodways ever since. A lifelong writer, Preston's creative work has won the Jeffrey Hewitt Memorial Prize, been commissioned by The Peace Studio, shortlisted for the Art of Creative Unity Award, nominated for Pushcart and Best of the Net, and published in dozens of literary journals in the US and abroad. His debut full-length poetry collection, Blood Alluvium, was released by Parlyaree Press in 2024 to international acclaim.

Education

Preston attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he studied English with a concentration in creative writing.
