The start of the fall season can bring a lot of emotions for people: sadness that the summer is over, fear about the upcoming winter, and anxiety over the upcoming holiday season and all of the shopping, preparation, and cooking that goes into it. However, there is a remedy for all of those complex feelings — and it all starts with the Starbucks app and an order from the coffee chain's acclaimed fall menu. For many years, I too was the person who would refresh my Instagram feed toward the end of August, waiting for the date that Starbucks would release the first of its fall menu, championed by none other than the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL). Although the PSL and its ragtag clan of beverage friends, including pumpkin-flavored, cold-foam-topped creations, cozy sippers, and something called an Iced Chaider, have been top of mind for me during the fall, I'll admit that I've never actually ordered anything besides the PSL.

So, I come to you today, in my warmest of flannels and coziest of beanies, to share the good, the bad, and the everything in between of Starbucks' 2026 fall menu, and to see whether any drink could beat out the beloved PSL. I ordered each of these drinks from my local Starbucks in Rhode Island on the same day and without modifications before tasting and critiquing the overall drink composition, balance of flavor, and sweetness. Then, I ranked them from worst to best.

14. Aerocano

Do you know how bad a beverage has to be for me to sip it and promptly mutter, "This is a stupid drink?" Bad, dear reader, really bad. When I picked this drink up, it looked like a nitro cold brew with its typical foamy top. The consistency looked to be creamy as well, though it quickly became apparent that this was a case of "better to look at than to drink."

The flavor of this coffee was abrasive and bitter in a way that nitro cold brew usually isn't. Starbucks makes this drink by whipping air into its blonde espresso, supposedly to add brightness and airiness. But all it did was make it all the more apparent that the Starbucks blonde roast espresso is poor-quality coffee. I anticipated this somewhat, as I went into this knowing the shortcomings of glorified fast food coffee. Its flavor isn't good or balanced in general, but this drink put those shortcomings into the spotlight, which made it all the more unpleasant to drink.

I would basically take any other unsweetened Starbucks coffee over this one. Compounded by the lack of seasonal essence and any reprieve from the bad espresso base, this is obviously one I'd recommend skipping.

13. Iced Banana Bread Chai

I can tell you with absolute certainty that this Iced Banana Bread Chai ruined chai for me entirely. Chai is supposed to be complex, spice-packed, and something that can turn anything it touches into a cozy sipper. But with this drink, it just bibbity boppity booped into a cloying nightmare.

There is simply so much going on in this drink that you lose the plot by sip number two. At first, I picked up on the banana essence, and once I breached the cold foam topping, I was met by a decidedly sweet flavor, but not one that was chai-forward. The banana note was more salient, though it couldn't offer anything meaningful against the barrage of sugar — which the sweetened chai syrup likely had something to do with. The flavor profile reads here as "sugar-sweetened milk," rather than "chai" or "banana".

The chai here acts as the megaphone for the sweetness of the Brown Sugar Cream Cold Foam and the banana syrup, rather than offering a grounding spice essence. I would order it for a sugar-obsessed child who loved the "Despicable Me" movie and couldn't stop screaming "Banana!" but I would never buy it for myself.

12. Caramel Aerocano

This drink is the pig that Starbucks put lipstick on. It has all of the same shortcomings as the unsweetened Aerocano, but this time, with a couple of pumps of caramel syrup (two for a tall, to be exact). All I tasted here was the caramel, though I really don't feel like "caramel" is entirely truthful. It's essentially simple syrup, as it lacks the toffee notes and depth that would make it a true caramel syrup — and that would make it more seasonal.

When paired with the syrup, the drink tasted watery, with a subtle punch of sweetness with every sip. On one hand, I was glad that the flavor was less abrasive than the OG Aerocano, but I still wasn't pleased. Considering the price of this drink, I would much rather order a cold brew or a plain iced coffee from Starbucks than settle for whatever the Caramel Aerocano is supposed to be getting at.

11. Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte

The nail in the coffin for the Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte wasn't that it was the only drink that required a straw, nor was it that the once-glorious whipped cream topping flattened into the rest of the drink within minutes. Rather, it was the fact that sipping it with a straw felt like shoving said straw straight into a jug of pumpkin syrup.

I thought the hot version of the Pumpkin Spice Latte was overly sweetened, but this drink takes it to a new level. The pumpkin was so heavy and cloying that it tasted burnt, which isn't something I got from the hot version of the drink. I had to mix it to distribute all the syrup, and even then, the pumpkin flavor overrode the espresso. Like many of the lower-ranking drinks on this list, this one read more as a dessert than a pre-10-a.m. sipper, and the baseball-bat-to-the-face of pumpkin flavor left me reaching for a glass of water. It was more pleasant than some of the lower-ranking sippers, and fall-like (too fall-like, if you ask me), but it's not one I'd order again.

10. Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai

Make no mistake: I had hope for the Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai. Chai and pumpkin are best buddies, as the flavor of the squash could benefit from the spices in chai. However, the issue here, as was the case with the Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte and the Iced Banana Bread Chai, is the sweetness.

The Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai comes with not only chai syrup but also pumpkin cream cold foam (which appears sweetened) and classic sugar syrup. What this amounts to, as I've come to learn with the lion's share of Starbucks drinks, is a beverage that you get two sips of before needing a palate cleanser. It would have been better if either the pumpkin cold foam or the chai were sweetened — but not both. To add insult to injury, any bit of chai flavor here is short-lived, so I could barely taste the essence this drink is named after. The chai was bolder here than in the Iced Banana Bread Chai, thankfully, but it still has a ways to go to impress me.

If I've learned anything in this experiment, it's not to trust Starbucks to do chai justice. There's no amount of cold foam that can cover up this mistake, which is what earns the Iced Pumpkin Cream Chai a spot near the bottom of my list.

9. Hot Pecan Crunch Latte

The Hot Pecan Crunch Latte markets itself as a drink for people who like fall, but don't want to dive head-first into an Iced Pumpkin Spiced Latte in all of its sugary glory (and I don't blame them). However, I underestimated how intense the pecan flavor would be here. It's more dominant than in the Pecan Cortado, and it reads as "bad coffee creamer" — like the-lid-of-the-creamer-fell-off-while-I-was-pouring bad. The nuttiness is strong to the point that it tastes abrasive and bitter, which contrasts with the milky sweetness of the latte in a way that you'd think would be nice but actually just makes the latte components taste at odds with one another.

The crunchy sugar sprinkles on top do nothing, and I don't really get a strong coffee essence in this drink (though I didn't get it in any of the other hot drinks I tried, so maybe it's a hot drink and syrup issue?). The aftertaste is the most pleasant thing about it, which isn't something I've ever said about a store-bought coffee.

8. Iced Pecan Crunch Latte

The flavor of this iced drink is demure in a way that coffee shouldn't be. It tastes like ice cream. Like the hot version of the drink, there is little coffee flavor to report, and the milky sweetness gives off major crème anglaise vibes (of course, not good crème anglaise). The fact that this cup tastes like 30% creamer doesn't do it any favors, and I don't know why it needs a cold foam topper (aside from aesthetics?). It just all seems excessive and showy — which doesn't make up for the inadequate drink underneath.

The espresso was wholly absent, and though the creamer was more subdued here than in the hot version of the drink, the flavor still wasn't great (nor as "fall" as some of my top-ranked picks). The more I sipped, the more I liked it, which was not the case for any drink that ranked below it, but I didn't like it enough to take more than three sips.

7. Iced Chaider

I could imagine the excitement in the Starbucks boardroom when some lowly hire told the rest of the team, "We're going to mix apple cider and chai and call it ... guess what? Chaider!" However, I imagine their feelings were dashed when someone suggested using not apple cider, as its name would suggest, but a Strawberry Acai Refresher Base instead. The latter individual surely deserves a pink slip, as this Iced Chaider is misleading marketing at its worst.

The chai essence was absent, yet again (I'm starting to think this is a theme). It's a little spicy, but those seasonings taste stale rather than fresh. The base, while refreshing, isn't seasonally appropriate, nor is it enough to convince me that it's supposed to be apple cider in there (if that was even the point at all). I imagine its perceived freshness has something to do with me trying 13 creamy, heavy, and milk-forward drinks alongside it. You're better off saving your money, buying a container of store-bought apple juice, and mixing it with the dusty spices in the back of your cabinet. It would probably taste better than this drink.

6. Iced Banana Bread Latte

Banana bread lattes are one of the viral food trends we should leave behind in 2026. But even I can admit that this Starbucks Iced Banana Bread Latte really isn't that bad. This one has banana syrup, Brown Sugar Cream Cold Foam, and the standard blonde espresso. I expected that the flavor would be as sweet as the Iced Banana Bread Chai was, but it was actually much more balanced. The banana flavor is more poignant, and its aftertaste is not Laffy Taffy-like, which I didn't expect, seeing as artificial banana usually tastes wrong.

Don't get me wrong: This drink still tastes like a dessert, not a coffee I'd drink in the morning. But after the ice waters it down a tad, the taste underneath is actually quite pleasant. I would have liked to see more coffee flavor from it, though, and it doesn't have the seasonal ties that my top-ranked drinks do.

5. Pecan Cortado

I would imagine a cortado to be the perfect coffee for someone who likes their drinks simple and to the point. When our taster tried Starbucks' Cortado, they said it was authentic. While I personally wouldn't go that far, I will say that the Pecan Cortado is better than most of the other Starbucks drinks on this list.

This likely has to do with the ratio of this coffee, which has three shots of espresso in an 8-ounce cup, which gives you more of a coffee-forward flavor than a milky latte. In this drink, more so than in the other hot drinks, coffee is the dominant flavor, with the pecan undertones coming through beautifully.

Now, more espresso introduces a problem — that problem being that Starbucks' espresso doesn't taste very well-rounded, especially compared to some of the best coffee brands I've tried. But this drink does prove that good things can come in small packages. It's not super "fall" compared to the higher-ranked beverages, but it's still one I would recommend folks not count out of the race based on its simplicity alone.

4. Hot Pumpkin Spice Latte

The Hot Pumpkin Spice Latte is an icon for a reason. This drink is the embodiment of fall seasonal drinks, and Starbucks has arguably perfected the recipe. Unlike the iced drink, I could actually taste the espresso, and the pumpkin is syrupy and almost sticky in the best ways. The pumpkin pairs well with the spice in a way that the chais on its fall menu don't, making it a must-order when the leaves start to fall and temperatures dip.

Granted, I think that the PSL is in its best form when it's not ordered as is, which is why it didn't place at the top of my list. It can be customized so many different ways, and if you prefer a more subtle sweetness, doing so is a must. I always go with half as much pumpkin and a lower-fat milk (like skim) to make it more appropriate for morning sipping — oh, and nix the pointless whipped cream on top.

3. Iced Pumpkin Cream Shaken Espresso

I personally don't like the flavor of Starbucks' Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso, so I was surprised to see that the Iced Pumpkin Cream Shaken Espresso curried so much favor this time around. Shaking espresso improves its taste without sacrificing quality, and that's certainly the case here. The coffee base wasn't as bitter as it could have been, and it was rife with sweet, nutty undertones that balanced the abrasive espresso flavor. Thankfully, and unlike other drinks on this list, it still tasted like a coffee first and a seasonal drink second.

The one critique that I do have here is that the pumpkin is underwhelming. The base of the drink is made with brown sugar syrup — not pumpkin — and I'm sure that swapping out this syrup base would make the flavor of this drink more seasonal. Granted, I liked that I could actually taste the cinnamon undercurrents here, which helped earn it a spot in the top three.

2. Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew

The winner in the coffee category was — narrowly — the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew. If I were to order an iced coffee from Starbucks, it would be a cold brew, as I find its profile less astringent than Starbucks' iced coffee. In this decidedly fall drink, the mellow cold brew cozies up to the milky base, offering a drink with just enough creaminess to make it cozy but still appropriately decadent to drink at any time of day.

The body and mouthfeel of this drink impressed me, and in this case, I do feel as though the cold foam added something to this drink rather than distracted from it. I knew every sip that I was drinking something pumpkin-flavored, which I didn't get as strongly with the Iced Pumpkin Cream Shaken Espresso. I also appreciated that I could come back to this drink 10, 15, and even 20 minutes after ordering it and still get a full sense of its flavor.

The Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew is very simple in concept for Starbucks' standards, but the execution is good enough to warrant a high spot. I can't say it surprised and impressed me as much as my top pick, though.

1. Iced Pumpkin Cream Matcha

If you had told me that I would be ranking a matcha at the top of my list of fall drinks, I would have called you a liar. But it's true; the Iced Pumpkin Cream Matcha is an odd combination, but it works remarkably well.

The pumpkin cold foam offers hints of pumpkin, which grabbed me by the hand and pulled me straight into grassy but not overwhelmingly earthy flavors of green tea. It's not overly sweet and reminded me of the Trader Joe's Matcha Mochi Ice Cream that I do love so much. The matcha has a vanilla undertone that jives with the pumpkin and makes it a better sipper than I would have ever thought possible.

I will warn you: This is a drink that is worth gulping. You will lose the pumpkin essence if you sip slowly, so be sure to drink quickly and earnestly if you want to taste the flavors at their best, brightest, and most autumnal.

Methodology

I ordered each of these coffees from my local Starbucks location in Westerly, Rhode Island, on the same morning. I sampled each of them as soon as I ordered them to ensure that I was getting the fullest expression of their flavors, before the ice had a chance to water them down or the hot coffee cooled. I also tasted them after they had been left to sit, often going back to them as I made my notes so that I could pick out the minute differences between them. I did not modify or customize any of the drinks.

I am by no means a Starbucks regular, so aside from the obligatory Pumpkin Spice Latte at the beginning of the season, I have no loyalty to any of these drinks. As such, I ranked them based on their flavor, seasonality, mouthfeel, and balance of sweetness. The best coffees are ones you can drink at any time of day, so I ranked the ones that were not overtly sweet but still fall-forward at the top of my list. Drinks with harsh, cloying, or underwhelming flavors ranked low. Price was not a consideration.
