Methodology

This list of the best barbecue spots in every U.S. state draws from my own experience as a local and national food reporter (including my tenure as a food reporter for South Carolina's most widely circulated newspaper), input from my colleagues in food, and input from locals on social media and digital review platforms.

With the goal of avoiding overhyped or lackluster barbecue spots, all eateries featured have an overwhelming consensus of positive reviews from diners. Barbecue spots were considered one of the best if they offered an exceptional quality of food, service, and overall customer experience.
