Pumpkin pie may take the cake for the most iconic fall dessert out there, but there's plenty more you can do with this squash. From sweet desserts like pumpkin bread or muffins, to savory dishes like mac and cheese or chili, there are a number of ways to make use of canned pumpkin beyond the pie. Sometimes, though, a half-used can of pumpkin sits in your fridge for days after you've made a tasty pumpkin dish. Before you toss it in the trash, there's a decadent treat you could make that will only require a couple of extra ingredients. Add Cool Whip and instant vanilla pudding to your can of pumpkin puree for the fluffiest and easiest fall-inspired dessert.

You can find several ways to finish up a can of pumpkin (such as turning it into a delicious pumpkin smoothie), but this pumpkin mousse is the way to go. A pumpkin treat doesn't need to be complicated, and this three-ingredient treat gives you a delicious result with very little effort. To create your mousse, simply add one can of pumpkin puree, a container of Cool Whip, and a packet of instant vanilla pudding mix to a bowl and mix it all up. If you're using up half a can of leftover pumpkin puree, you can adjust the ratios as necessary. Pop your mixture into the fridge for at least an hour to allow the pudding mix to set, though two or three hours is even better. This will also give your mousse the ideal smooth and airy consistency. When it's ready to serve, you'll have a creamy, melt-in-your-mouth fluff that's bursting with pumpkin flavor.

Tasty tricks for the best pumpkin mousse

While a three-ingredient pumpkin mousse is delicious as is, there are a few ways to make this dessert even better. Vanilla-flavored instant pudding pairs well with the pumpkin, but you could also swap out vanilla for cheesecake instant pudding for a richer result. This pumpkin fluff is delicious served with cookies, apples, pears, or any other autumnal foods you can find. You could even add pumpkin pie spice and turn this into an easy four-ingredient pumpkin dip. If you'd like to add a bit of protein to your fluff, you could blend in cottage cheese or Greek yogurt for a denser, protein-packed result. Top off your mousse with whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon or nuts for an added crunchy texture.

This dessert may be great for using up leftover canned pumpkin, but it can also make a great addition to a holiday party. Add your pumpkin mixture to a piping bag and pipe the mousse into small containers to impress your guests. If you use a freshly opened can of puree, this fluff can be stored in the fridge for three to four days if you're planning to make it ahead, or somehow have leftovers. Pumpkin mousse may just steal every fall-flavored dessert's spotlight.
