You probably have a few pasta sauce recipes tucked up your sleeve. Or, at the very least, you have a few go-to jars of sauce in your cupboards, ready to go at a moment's notice. For many, myself included, pasta is a comfort and a staple. And its accompanying sauces are delicious, if not a bit rote. I, like so many other home cooks, find myself making the same few sauces over and over. That's really a shame, because pasta sauces are ripe for exploration and invention. And no, you don't need to start from scratch.

All you need is one or two hacks, ingredient alterations, or additions to turn that go-to Alfredo recipe into a fresh, new pasta dish. And lucky for you, we've gathered 11 unexpected, creative, and downright delicious ways to zhuzh up your next pasta night. Who knows? It might just renew your love for standby marinara recipe.

Finish it it off with cold butter

Have you ever tried adding butter to your sauce at the end of cooking? Well, you should. This method is called monter au beurre, and it involves adding small chunks of cold butter to a simmering sauce and stirring until melted. The cold butter will emulsify your sauce, creating a rich, velvety texture and a more substantial flavor. I particularly like using this hack on tomato sauces, as it can help to mellow out the sharper, acidic flavors.

Use black garlic for a more complex flavor

Black garlic is one of those powerhouse ingredients that instantly transforms whatever dish it is added to. It is jammy, packed with umami, and has a sweet molasses edge. This ingredient works best when added to Alfredo sauces, where it can really shine, adding a punch of bright flavor to the creamy base. But beware, you won't want to use too much of this ingredient (start with about a tablespoon and go from there), as it can be pretty intense.

Swirl in some hot honey

Hot honey is sweet, spicy, and just might be the perfect thing for your next batch of pasta. The touch of sweetness from the honey can add a lovely and unexpected layer of flavor to both white and red sauces, and the added chili peppers give it a bite that makes this mix-in really pop. Use as a top-off to a bowl of marinara (perhaps with a bit of creamy burrata) or on a rich carbonara.

Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce

Worcestershire sauce is made from a litany of ingredients both obscure and obvious (molasses and cured anchovies are often included), all of which come together to make a super umami powerhouse. Often added to roasts, stews, and burgers, this sauce would work beautifully in a meat sauce, such as a bolognese or ragu (both beef and pork). It will help to really draw out those meaty flavors and give them a bit more vivacity. You only need a few splashes for maximum impact — this stuff is really concentrated.

Use ghee to bring out a depth of flavor

While butter is lovely, its clarified counterpart, ghee, just has some kind of je ne sais quoi that makes it truly stand apart. It has a rich, nutty, and slightly toasty flavor that can add depth to cream sauces. I also use it to cook aromatics when building a red sauce, as its high smoke point allows for great saute. Plus, it has the same richness as butter, so it's great for anyone who wants to use butter in lieu of olive oil for a pan lubricant when cooking pasta sauce.

Add in some olive brine

Let's get salty with some delicious and intense olive brine. And no, this ingredient isn't just reserved for dirty martinis, though you can use it to make a dirty martini pasta by combining it with garlic, olives, lemon juice, butter, and maybe a crumble of blue cheese. You can also add a splash to Alfredo to bring a briny kick, or add it to red sauce to make a bloody mary-inspired pasta.

Use Boursin cheese for instant flavor

Boursin cheese is creamy, crumbly, and has a wonderfully tangy flavor that would work in so many pasta dishes. Plus, it comes in many different flavors, most of which could work well within pasta sauce (think: garlic and fine herbs or caramelized onion). Adding Boursin cheese can be as simple as adding a wheel in to milk and butter to make a cream sauce. You can also use Boursin cheese as a shortcut to better jarred pasta sauce, or bake it in the oven with some tomatoes, onions, and garlic to make the TikTok viral Boursin pasta.

Make a sauce with roasted carrots

Carrots are no stranger to a red sauce. They're often included in red sauce recipes as a way to add sweetness. But what if you gave this staple, sleeper ingredient a bit of a roast, and made it the star of your show by pureeing them into a lovely, tasty pasta sauce? Make sure to add aromatics, seasoning, and maybe a bit of Parmesan. If you just want a kiss of roasted carrot flavor, add about a quarter to a half cup of roasted carrots to a batch of sauce to give it a lovely, caramelized kick.

Top with candied bacon

Candied bacon is the perfect blend of sweet and savory. It's great for a treat, served as an appetizer, and, in its bite-sized form, is perfect for sprinkling atop a lovely bowl of pasta. This candied meat topper works especially well with a cream sauce, such as Alfredo, though it would also work well with a carbonara pasta.

Mix in a can of V8

V8 is so much more than just a vegetable-infused tomatoey beverage, though it is that. It's used in everything from bloody mary cocktails to big batches of chili. And it also just might be what your next batch of pasta sauce is missing. Adding it to a red sauce will give your sauce a hearty, vegetal flavor that can help perk up your sauce with very little effort. Use it as the base for your sauce (though you will need to reduce it a bit), or add it as a supplement.

Stir in some bacon jam

Bacon jam, like candied bacon, is a lovely blending of sweet and savory. However, bacon jam takes the form of, well, a jam. This makes it more apt for stirring into sauces, particularly creamy, velvety Alfredo sauces. And it really is as simple as that. Add a few tablespoons to your homemade (or store-bought) Alfredo sauce for an instantly savory and uniquely sweet kick. You can also find spicy bacon jams for even more flavor (jalapeño bacon jam would add a particularly delicious kick).
