Aldi and Lidl are budget-friendly shopping destinations selling quality food at value prices. And while there are many reasons beef is expensive in 2026, we all know these stores can provide some relief. But which one has a better value on steak cuts? To find out, it's important to compare price, convenience, quality, and selection to decide which store is the better option for steaks.

If you compare regular prices between steak cuts, Aldi usually has less expensive options, priced by the pound. For example, skirt steak at Lidl is usually $12.95 per pound, while Aldi normally sells it for $11.95 per pound. For New York strip steak, Lidl charges $13.85 per pound for regular boneless ($12.78 per pound for boneless grass-fed beef). Aldi charges $13.79 per pound for boneless Black Angus and $11.99 per pound for grass-fed boneless. Then there's ribeye. At Lidl, it's $14.85 per pound for boneless, and at Aldi, it's $12.99 per pound for boneless grass-fed. You can see the variation in price, with steak cuts at Lidl typically costing up to a couple of dollars more than at Aldi.

But if you take sale prices into account, it might be a different story. For example, at Lidl, skirt steak was on sale for $9.99 per pound at the time of writing, and at Aldi, the skirt steak was on sale for $10.99 per pound. Moreover, cost isn't the only factor to consider.

More things to consider between steak cuts at Aldi vs Lidl

In addition to cost, meat quality also makes a difference. Chowhound listed Aldi among the top 12 grocery chains with the highest-quality meat departments, most notably for beef. While it's difficult to discern the quality without actually eating the cut, there's also the difference in beef type to consider. While both retailers offer USDA Choice cuts, the steak cuts at Lidl tend to be either regular or grass-fed, whereas Aldi offers mostly Black Angus, grass-fed, and some regular cuts. Black Angus beef is rich in marbling, which many people say makes for melt-in-your-mouth-tender beef, while grass-fed beef tends to be leaner and more firm, with a richer taste. If you prefer Black Angus, Aldi carries many cuts which you can find on Chowhound's definitive ranking of Aldi steaks selling at reasonable prices between $9-$15 per pound, compared to Angus steak cuts at Kroger, where prices range between $12-$20 per pound.

The variety of the steak cuts available to purchase at each store could sway your decision; however, there actually isn't a lot of difference in selection between stores. In addition to the cuts listed above, Lidl also sells chuck, T-bone, bottom round, tenderloin, and a separate Rastelli's filet mignon listing, while Aldi also stocks top sirloin, top round, eye of round, and tenderloin filet mignon.

For some shoppers, one big difference between Aldi and Lidl that might affect where you shop is simply the convenience of the respective store locations. But if that's not the case for you, and you're not picky, Aldi may be the better budget grocery chain for steak.
