The Fast Food Chain Millennials Prefer Over McDonald's And Burger King
Since fast food appeared on America's culinary map more than a century ago, it has staked its claim as one of the country's go-to choices for quick meals. Over the years, many chains have come and gone, while some have made lasting impressions — and that's especially among certain age groups. For millennials, plenty of chains have fought for their attention — Chick-fil-A, Five Guys, and In-N-Out, for example. But among this age group, one chain stands above them all, and that's Taco Bell.
According to research conducted by YouGov, Taco Bell is the most popular dining brand among millennials. For the purpose of the study, YouGov defined "popularity" as "the percentage of people who have a positive opinion of a dining brand." With a 75% popularity rating, Taco Bell topped the entire list of dining brands — besting the rest of the top five, which included Pizza Hut, Krispy Kreme, Little Caesars, and Texas Roadhouse.
There's a clear separation between what millennials, Gen X, and boomers think of Taco Bell. While millennials ranked it tops, the other two demographics don't think much of the Americanized Mexican chain. It ranks No. 26 overall with a 59% popularity rating for Gen X and No. 39 overall with a 54% rating for boomers. These generations probably even remember when Taco Bell sold burgers.
Millennials love this taco chain
In terms of fast food chains, other contenders for the millennial dollar include Chick-fil-A (68%), Five Guys (68%), In-N-Out (65%), and McDonald's (63%). But nobody beats Taco Bell. YouGov provides the data but doesn't really dig into why the younger generation might lean more toward Taco Bell than others.
We'll take a stab at this question, though. And, keep in mind, this is complete speculation on our part. Millennials are generally considered the age group currently between 30 and 45 years old. In other words, this demographic was coming of age during the height of Taco Bell's marketing prowess. These were the days of Taco Bell's quirky chihuahua commercials and "Think Outside the Bun," a time when the Crunchwrap Supreme and the Doritos Locos Tacos first debuted. These menu items were so popular that the chain brought them back in 2025 as part of a Y2K Decades Menu.
We think the nostalgia of the early 2000s keeps the millennials coming back. Obviously, Taco Bell's bestselling items are doing something right — so maybe it's that double hit of nostalgia and attractive menu items that keep drawing this age group back in. While it's true that the boomer generation is certainly loyal — they do love some classic Wendy's — it appears that millennials are loyal as well, especially when a brand leans into its past. Taco Bell might not be for everyone, but millennials love it. And kudos to Taco Bell for recognizing that loyalty.
