College Students' Favorite Fast Food Chain In 2026 Isn't Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Or Domino's

Fast food and college students go together like salt on french fries. A 2026 review by the Education Data Initiative found college students spend about $410 per month eating off-campus while often getting special discounts at local fast food restaurants. Surveys over the years have likewise found that students eat fast food one to three times a week. But if you thought the object of college students' fast food affection was Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Domino's, or perhaps the burger chain crowned the nation's most-recommended dining brand, you might be surprised to learn that the winner is none other than McDonald's. Yes, plain old McDonald's, the largest and arguably the most classic American fast food franchise of all.

Okay, maybe it's not that surprising considering the sheer prevalence of McDonald's and the fact that it sells a crazy number of burgers every second. According to YouGov survey results published in September 2026, McDonald's singlehandedly beat out the competition among college students for quick-service restaurants, nabbing a 47% consideration score. For comparison, Chick-fil-A, Domino's, and Wendy's all tied in second place with 34% each, while Taco Bell placed behind them all with 28%. It's worth noting though that these votes are just for consideration — as in, where college students think about buying food. Simply winning in consideration does not indicate that McDonald's is seen as the best fast food restaurant among this demographic. In fact, other results from the survey regarding quality and value suggest the opposite (McDonald's did not place in the top five for either).

Proximity and mobile ordering may be key drivers of where college students get fast food

McDonald's fare performs decently among fast food burger rankings, but the YouGov survey indicates college students perceive Chick-fil-A, In-N-Out, and others to be better quality. Instead, evidence suggests it all comes down more to proximity and the close ties a student feels with their college community. One 2023 study from the National Library of Medicine conducted by researchers from multiple California universities found that only 7% of college students who strongly identified with their student community patronized restaurants farther away from campus, whereas 44% of students with the same sentiments patronized ones closer by. Exactly how many McDonald's are near college campuses in the U.S. is unknown, but seeing them adjacent to campuses or, in some cases, actually on campuses, is relatively common.

There's also the McDonald's mobile app, which has regular value menu deals that may be particularly attractive to college students. Food & Wine actually ranked it one of the best fast food apps (out of 12 that were reviewed) in 2025, noting its app-exclusive promos in particular. None of the fast food restaurants that ranked well for quality in the YouGov survey made the list. Along with app deals, it's also possible that some McDonald's locations may offer special discounts to customers with valid college IDs. There's no national program to do so, but McDonald's is a franchise where individual owners may form their own local partnerships, and such discounts among fast food chains near college campuses are not unheard of.
