A classic grilled cheese is one of those comfort foods we all seem to gravitate toward, but there are plenty of ways to turn it into something even more flavorful than the standard cheese slice between bread. You can add savory bacon, sweet jam, or even an earthy, creamy cheese. Or, you can pair the sandwich with a delicious soup for dipping — and we don't mean tomato.

There are a handful of other grilled cheese dipping sauces besides classic tomato soup. For instance, opt for a different soup and sandwich combination by dipping that grilled cheese in Buffalo-style cream of chicken soup, like Campbell's version, for the spicy kick your grilled cheese needs. Pairing this soup and sandwich gives you the flavors of a Buffalo chicken grilled cheese without actually having to spice up the sandwich itself.

This is a great idea if you're cooking for a crowd. Simply prepare standard grilled cheeses, then offer a handful of soups, including the Buffalo cream of chicken, so guests can have a variety of soup and sandwich flavors to choose from. With that said, if you do want to build on the grilled cheese before dipping it, there are plenty of ways to help it pair even better with the spicy soup.

Boost your grilled cheese and Buffalo chicken soup pairing

There are a few considerations to keep in mind when assembling a grilled cheese to dip in Buffalo cream of chicken soup. So many cheeses go with that spicy Buffalo flavor, so you can get away with using any of your favorites on the sandwich. Sharp cheddar, semi-soft fontina, or even stretchy mozzarella will work. Add a few blue cheese crumbles to the sandwich, too. The pungent cheese is often included in Buffalo chicken dip, so it's a natural choice here, just note that it can be overpowering. It shouldn't stand alone on the sandwich, but it can be a perfect flavor kick when paired in moderation with another cheese. You can also spread some ranch or blue cheese dressing on the inside of the bread, too, to bring out even more flavor when dipping it in the spicy soup.

Finally, stick with a sturdy bread that will give you the best crispy grilled cheese — you want it to hold up to the soup, not get soft and soggy within seconds. A crispy ciabatta roll is perfect because it has that hearty crust on all sides, but any thick bread, such as a French or Italian loaf, will also work.
