Smart Costco Shoppers Never Skip This High-Quality Kirkland Signature Seafood Find

When you're thinking of making fish or seafood for dinner, buying frozen might not be the first idea that comes to mind. You might think it's obvious to visit the fish counter at your local grocery store — or, better yet, a fresh fish market in town; But, when done properly, frozen seafood can be just as good, if not superior, than its fresh counterpart. In fact, one of chef Andrew Zimmern's tips for buying fish is picking frozen over fresh in some instances. 

According to many Costco shoppers, that's exactly the case when it comes to the store's Kirkland Signature Wild Caught Mahi-Mahi – although frozen, it's quality is better than a lot of fresh options you'll find. A lot of the fresh fish at grocery stores has been frozen for transport, then thawed on-site to sell. Even if it's fresh, you can't be sure how long it's been since the fish was caught or how long it's been sitting in the fish case. On the other hand, fish that is flash frozen, like Costco's mahi-mahi, is frozen within minutes of being caught, locking in the flavor and quality. That fresh-off-the-boat quality seems to be precisely what shoppers like about the Kirkland Signature Wild Caught Mahi-Mahi.

Small portions aren't the warehouse chain's thing — it's either go big or go home. That's the case here as well. The three-pound package of mahi-mahi sells for around $42.55, and contains individually-wrapped portions that are between four to eight ounces. That works out to somewhere between six to 12 portions per package. And reviews indicate that this frozen fish is a can't-miss if you're looking for high-quality seafood.

A reviewer on Facebook loves the Costco mahi-mahi: "My friend turned me onto these mahi-mahi fillets in the freezer section at Costco. I'm telling you they're just as good as they came off the boat." They also add that the mahi-mahi doesn't have a fishy smell and that its texture is super light, suggesting that it goes very well with a tomato and jalapeño salsa.

A chef on YouTube cooked up the Kirkland Signature frozen fish and compared it to fresh mahi-mahi that they had caught and cooked in Hawaii. "I'm going to say this tastes just like the fish we caught in Hawaii," they said. "Good job, Costco. This is actually going to be one of my favorites." Another YouTuber listed the mahi-mahi as one of the 12 best Costco frozen seafood items worth the purchase.

That said, Costco shoppers do acknowledge the fairly high price. But most still don't seem to mind it. "I think it's the best fish they have ... To me, it's expensive, but worth it," one Redditor says. Another commenter concured, saying "I can make six tacos with each filet ... I do agree the quality is worth it. I'd pay more." Using the Costco find to make tacos is sound advice, too — mahi-mahi is the best fish for tacos, after all.
