The internet is full of tips on how to upgrade your salad (including our own compilation of Ina Garten's salad tips), but one of the most interesting ways to, ahem, mix things up is also one of the easiest. While hard-boiled eggs have long been a salad staple, another kind works just as well (or arguably better): scrambled.

Scrambled eggs bring beautiful, tender curds to your salad, instead of the sometimes awkward pieces of sliced hard-boiled eggs, where the yolk in particular can often disintegrate rather than cleanly divide. Scrambled eggs are also super convenient; skip all the boiling, cooling, and peeling, and swap your pot for a skillet. Scrambled eggs also open up some great opportunities for fun hacks, like folding in some caramelized onions.

For salad, you want to aim for tender, distinct curds rather than a loose, saucy scramble. Break down the largest pieces into bite-sized portions so they can mingle with your other toppings; they work especially well with tomatoes and chopped cucumbers.

Let your dressing guide the seasoning

You can whip up perfectly light, airy scrambled eggs in just two minutes, leaving time to ponder the perfect seasoning and dressing pairing. Be sure to whisk in any spices before you scramble, or, if you're using herbs, you can finish with them at the end.

For a lemon vinaigrette, consider some bold flavors like dill and black pepper, which will not only enhance the flavor of the eggs but will mix well with salad ingredients like tomatoes or olives. Or add oregano to your scramble then pair the eggs with basil, tomatoes, and a red wine vinaigrette. Basil and lemon are also a harmonious pairing to top scrambies over a bed of mixed greens.

For ranch, try chives, garlic powder, and some white pepper on the eggs. Or for a creamy Caesar, a little Parmesan and lightly sweated diced onions are a good match. If you've got a dressing with lime and cilantro notes, you can balance them by adding smoked paprika and cumin to your eggs, and include some black beans and avocado in the salad itself. Always taste your dressing before salting your scramble, and adjust any seasoning to your preference.
