Biscuits and gravy are a classic comfort food — and one with a pretty fascinating history. Biscuits alone have undergone a series of transformations over the years thanks to innovations like baking powder and soda, packaged biscuit mix, etc. — all of which have helped them become a more popular and palatable food. Today, of course, we have the advantage of readily available canned or frozen biscuits. And along with that convenience, canned gravy. Combine these two store-bought ingredients, and you've got a comforting breakfast that comes together in a flash.

Pillsbury supplies a recipe for biscuits and gravy on its website, using a can of its Grands Southern Homestyle Biscuits and a homemade sausage gravy. Simply cook the biscuits as instructed, make your gravy, and top your finished biscuits with your completed gravy. But while that seems simple enough, swapping canned gravy for homemade may get everyone to the breakfast table even quicker. Campbell's, Libby's, Chef-mate, Great Value and other brands all make canned sausage gravy you should be able to pick up at your local grocery store.

Frozen biscuits work as well; in fact, several Reddit commenters prefer frozen biscuits over canned due to a better flavor, plus the fact that you have more control over the portions. And of course, you're not limited to simply combining a couple frozen (or canned) biscuits and a can of gravy as-is; there are several ways to add your own creative touch to give it more of a homemade feel.

Making the most of canned ingredients

Perhaps it's worth noting here that, in a Reddit thread about the easiest way to make biscuits and gravy at home, most commenters were onboard with the idea of using pre-made biscuits. (One parent even said that their children vehemently prefer canned biscuits over their homemade ones.) However, they felt less-so when it came to the gravy. After all, you can make a sausage gravy in as little as 15 minutes. If you don't love the idea of canned gravy but don't have the bandwidth to make it from scratch, keep in mind that there are some ways to give the canned stuff a bolder, fresher flavor: Add fresh herbs, sauteed mushrooms, or a splash of hot sauce, for example.

When it comes to upgrading your pre-made biscuits, again, customers seem to prefer frozen biscuits over canned biscuits when it comes to quality, so that's a great place to start. But regardless of whether you're using canned or frozen biscuits, an easy upgrade is to brush them with melted butter and top them with a sprinkle of sea salt. You could even add in some garlic or fresh herbs into the butter for an unexpected and more complex flavor.

In addition to making classic biscuits and gravy, you can use pre-made biscuits and gravy to make a biscuits and gravy casserole. Simply add your gravy to the bottom of a baking dish, and top it with your biscuits before baking. This, too, can be done using either canned or frozen biscuits.
