If one of your favorite Aldi items has suddenly disappeared from store shelves, you may not be imagining things. According to an alleged Aldi employee, September is reset season, which means Aldi stores discontinue some products (sometimes only temporarily) to make room for new seasonal items for the holidays and wintertime.

If you're confused about whether an item is simply out of stock or discontinued, there's an easy way to determine which is which, but you do have to go to your local Aldi store: Just check the price tag. If you see a "D" next to the item number, that tells you an Aldi product has been discontinued. It usually means the product is gone for good, or a good amount of time, while a "U" means it's unavailable and is generally expected to return.

The good news is you can use this knowledge to your advantage. If there are any items left for sale with a "D" or "U," they're often discounted, so snatch up some of those if it's something you like. Just check to see if there's a sign that says there's a maximum number of that product you can buy, because there may be a limit per shopper on items in high demand. We found these 12 Aldi items have been discontinued, from pretzels to salsa and even beverages.

Clancy's Pub Style Seasoned Pretzels

Unfortunately, the Clancy's Pub Style Seasoned Pretzels are gone. An alleged Aldi employee confirms this on Reddit, "Aldi worker here. Sorry, they've been gone for a while now." They explained that they might come back, as some discontinued items do, but they'll likely be under a different manufacturer and may not taste the same if so. They're also unavailable from Amazon, so the brand might just be discontinuing this flavor and style. The Clancy's Original Homestyle Seasoned Pretzel Twists and Clancy's Honey Mustard Homestyle Seasoned Pretzel Twists are still available.

Earth Grown Vegan Meatless Jumbo Hot Dogs

It unfortunately looks like Aldi is discontinuing its Earth Grown Meatless Franks, along with a few other Earth Grown items, which are all vegetarian or vegan friendly. One Redditor lamented, "I understand some things came and went with the seasons, but this seems like a mass exodus of Vegan friendly items." Some shoppers theorize that vegan and vegetarian diets just aren't as popular as they once were, and that's why these are being discontinued. That may be the case, but without a statement from Earth Grown, we're not completely sure.

Earth Grown Vegan Black Bean Chipotle Burgers

These Vegan Black Bean Chipotle Burgers are another discontinued Earth Grown product. One Redditor says, "I did love Earth Grown when it debuted at Aldi. But the best product was veggie burgers that didn't last long. They were a box of four and only available for roughly six months." They may have been available for only a short time, but shoppers seemed to love these veggie burgers.

Earth Grown Vegan Zesty Italian Meatless Meatballs

Next up from the discontinued Earth Grown line is its Vegan Zesty Italian Meatless Meatballs. One Facebook shopper complains, "In my decade of veganism I've never found a meatball that compares to these." Until you find something you like just as much as Earth Grown, or Aldi brings these back, you can make your own vegan meatballs using textured vegetable protein as a swap for ground beef. Just add some Italian seasoning and shape it into balls. Maybe you'll like it so much you'll forget all about this discontinued Aldi item.

Earth Grown Vegan Classic Meatless Meatballs

The final Earth Grown product no longer available at Aldi is its Vegan Classic Meatless Meatballs. A Redditor complained, "I MISS THE MEATBALLS SO MUCH!" If you're using textured vegetable protein to make your own vegan meatballs, all you need is salt and pepper to recreate the Aldi version, or you could add some taco seasoning for a Tex-Mex meatless meatballs dish.

Panera Bread Baked Potato Soup

Sorry Panera lovers, its Baked Potato Soup has been discontinued at Aldi. We searched high and low for this soup and found some at Walmart ($5.94 for 16 ounces) and Target ($9.99 for 32 ounces), but these prices don't compare to Aldi's super-low price of $3.19 for 10 ounces. If you see any, pick up as many as you can. You can also get a bowl at Panera if you want to stop in and enjoy a serving.

Prime Energy Drink, assorted varieties

Aldi is discontinuing its Original, Cherry Limeade, and Dream Pop Prime Energy Drink flavors. If you find any, snatch these up while they're on clearance. If you need your Prime Energy fix, Amazon and Walmart offer the Original and Dream Pop flavors for comparable prices, while Walmart offers the Cherry Limeade flavor.

Millville Honey Wheat Puffs Cereal

Aldi's Millville Honey Wheat Puffs Cereal is discontinued. Millville is Aldi's exclusive brand of cereal that has some major dupes on name-brand cereals. This Honey Wheat Puffs cereal is Aldi's dupe for Kellogg's Honey Smacks. Aldi still has some other dupes available, including its Honey Nut Crispy Oats (a dupe for Honey Nut Cheerios), Honey Crunch 'N Oats (a dupe for Honey Bunches of Oats), and Honey Grahams (a dupe for Golden Grahams).

Summit Popz Prebiotic Soda, assorted flavors

Speaking of dupes, a few flavors of Aldi's Summit Popz, a dupe for Poppi, were discontinued back around April: Spiced Apple Cider, Pomegranate Orange, and Cranberry. They might have been discontinued because these are seasonal flavors, so they could come back another time, but there's no way to know for sure. Snag them while you can if there are any left. Otherwise, try some of the other flavors still available.

Benner Unsweetened Black Tea

Next up is Benner Unsweetened Black Tea, which was available as a pack of six for under $6. One Redditor offered up an alternative, saying "I'm doing the Benner Chai Black Tea bags. I add a few drops of Trader Joe's stevia liquid. I brew it and then chill it, I like it cool." Another Redditor offered their recipe for iced black tea: "I pick up 100 black teabags for $1.79. Boil ½ gallon of water, add six teabags, steep for 30 minutes. My glass of iced tea is about 5 cents. I add a splash of Aldi lemon juice (about $2.79 for a large bottle) or a lemon wedge. No sugar."

Kirkwood Spicy Chicken Patties

Sorry to those who love the Kirkwood Spicy Chicken Patties. In a Reddit post from March, one shopper asked if these were discontinued, and another Redditor replied, "[They] were on clearance at one of my [Aldis] a week or so ago for $2.75. Mentioned to the cashier, she told [me] to grab them while I could they would not be back."

Specially Selected Salsas, assorted flavors

Two Specially Selected Salsa flavors — the Mild Cilantro Lime and Mild Chimichurri – have been discontinued. Keep an eye out for a return, though; as one Redditor points out, "For my stores, this is around the time of the year where they get rid of [the Selected Medium Four Pepper Restaurant Style Salsa] and bring out the chimichurri sauce, I'm waiting for that." The Specially Selected Mild Avocado Tomatillo Salsa and Specially Selected Mild Roasted Verde Salsa are also still available.
