Asparagus and onions are two curious vegetables, and we're not talking about taste. Maybe you bought one or the other (or both) for a special dinner, only to wind up tossing the unused portions in the trash days later. Yes, even in the fridge, both onions and asparagus can go bad pretty fast, from unpleasant wrinkling and browning to even more unpleasant sliminess (looking at you, asparagus). They can get gross so quickly, it can make even experienced home cooks want to cry.

Before you do that though — or, worse, resign yourself to just always wasting part of your purchase– it's time to see what Chowhound's own Chef Josh Donelson has to say. Josh knows the aggravation of spoiled produce, and so he's come up with some simple, quick tips to help keep both asparagus and onions lasting longer. And, when we say "quick," we mean it — all it takes is just a couple minutes when you get home from the store to set aside the portions you don't need and get them prepped and properly preserved for future use.

The really awesome part? You don't even need anything fancy to preserve them! Follow these tips using a few things you probably already have in your kitchen, and the next time you're crying in the kitchen should only be when you're cutting onions to make a delicious meal.
