Spaghetti is widely regarded as the world's most beloved pasta, and that's hardly a surprise. Whether you prefer it with rich, savory marinara sauce; cheesy, garlicky Alfredo; or even creamy, smoky carbonara, it's always a treat for the taste buds. However, if you're getting tired of making the same recipes over and over again, it's time to give your next dinner a twist, and French onion soup and spaghetti make a delicious combination.

If you love French onion soup as much as you love pasta, this is definitely a dish worth trying. It's rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. Much of that flavor develops thanks to the onions, which take on a deeper, sweeter taste once they're left to slowly caramelize in butter. That sweetness, in turn, is beautifully balanced by the beef broth, which adds savory umami, while the melted Gruyère cheese adds complexity, creaminess, and nuttiness.

The spaghetti provides carbs, which the body breaks down into simple sugars, such as glucose, for fuel. Meanwhile, carbs also activate the brain's reward system and promote the release of feel-good hormones, including serotonin. This explains why eating pasta makes you happier. However, that's not all spaghetti brings to the dish. While the pasta simmers in the broth, it gradually releases starch into the liquid. This helps the sauce thicken so it can coat every strand of spaghetti evenly.

A single pot is all you need to bring French onion spaghetti together

One of the biggest advantages of this dish is that you can prepare everything in a single pot, so you don't have to deal with a messy kitchen later. Plus, it takes less than an hour to make. With that in mind, to really nail the flavor and texture, pick the absolute best onion variety for French onion soup: yellow onions, a popular choice for soups thanks to their balanced flavor. Although bright and mellow, sweet onions can overpower the dish due to their sugar content. In turn, red onions, while wonderfully complex and bitter, may alter the sauce's color and make it less appealing. Whichever cultivar you opt for, it's important that the onions are fresh.

Once you choose your onion, dice and saute it in a hot skillet with some melted butter until it begins to turn golden-brown. You could also let it caramelize completely for a sweeter touch. If you want extra protein, you could add a pound of ground beef. Next, pour in the beef broth, and season with black pepper and parsley. A splash of white wine can add even more flavor.

Give everything a good stir, then add the spaghetti directly to the skillet. Make sure the noodles are completely submerged in the liquid so they cook evenly. Bring everything to a gentle boil and cook until the noodles are ready, then stir in some heavy cream and Gruyère for an irresistible creamy texture. Gouda, mozzarella, and parmesan are also great options. Let the cheese melt, and dig right in.
