Few trendy foods have had staying power in the United States like Greek yogurt, which gained popularity in the early 2010s. Today, we still love it for its cool, creamy richness and high B vitamin content, in addition to being packed with protein. It's also incredibly versatile, pairing beautifully with a wide variety of fruit, including tangy caramelized apples.

Though caramel apples and caramelized apples sound similar, one is an apple coated in fudgy caramel, and the other is an apple that's been gently sauteed in a pan with butter to caramelize its natural sugars and make them syrupy sweet. Layered on top of Greek yogurt, the sweetness of the apples balances out the sour notes in the yogurt, while the tangy nuances of both ingredients mingle and elevate each other. The Greek yogurt suddenly tastes creamier and sweeter, while the caramelized apples are delightfully fruity and floral, with a warm, cozy flavor that makes the combination especially fitting for fall.

The key to making this combination work is cold Greek yogurt and warm (not hot) apples. If you spoon the apples over the yogurt piping hot, it'll become thin, runny, and start to lose its creamy texture. However, warm apples on cool yogurt evoke the feeling of enjoying apple pie a la mode, especially if you stir some instant pudding mix into your Greek yogurt to infuse it with dreamy vanilla or cheesecake flavors.

Infusing Greek yogurt with autumnal goodness

Caramelizing apples on the stovetop is relatively simple, provided you have a little patience, as they respond best to being cooked slowly on medium or medium-low heat. Warm butter coats them in lush richness and helps them break down enough to become soft without turning to mush. If you'd like them to cook a little faster, you can also add a tablespoon or two of liquid to the pan to create steam. Water works fine, but something like apple cider or lemon juice adds more flavor. You can also sprinkle on some brown sugar or drizzle in a touch of maple syrup toward the end, along with some cinnamon or apple pie spice to really bring their flavors to life.

These tender apples have an almost candied flavor, making them one of the tastiest ways to sweeten your Greek yogurt. Of course, you can also zhuzh up your Greek yogurt with some nut butter, as apples pair beautifully with peanut butter and almond butter, along with more specialized spreads like walnut or pistachio butter. The rich nuttiness of these spreads helps further soften the yogurt's tartness, creating a creamier, denser base to showcase the apples.

This combo is also perfect for building a deliciously autumn-inspired parfait, complete with layers of cool yogurt, sugary apples, and things like crushed toasted pecans or peanut brittle. You can also douse each layer in ribbons of buttery caramel to get double the beautiful caramelized flavor.
