PREVIOUS: Martinique Cocktail NEXT: Amer Picon Cocktail

Ingredients (5)

  • Ice cubes
  • 1 1/2 ounces Campari
  • 1 1/2 ounces sweet vermouth
  • Chilled club soda
  • Slice of orange or lemon, for garnishing

A recipe for what we call the Americano goes as far back as 1861, when it was served at Gaspare Campari’s bar in Milan, says cocktail author Rob Chirico. During Prohibition the drink found favor with booze-deprived tourists from the U.S. and became known as the Americano or American Highball.

  1. 1Add ice cubes to a large Old Fashioned or collins glass. Add the Campari and vermouth.
  2. 2Top off with club soda, then garnish with a slice of orange or lemon.
