The Bride and I have just returned from our second visit to Zwahlen's, a place recommended by HollyEats.com that makes rich, eggy frozen custard (vanilla, chocolate, and the flavor of the day). They also have handmade chocolates, and about 15 varieties of chocolate candy apples. They use no preservatives, cream from a local dairy, and fruit purees not artificial flavorings.
While we were there this afternoon a timer rang: A fresh tray of apple crisp was on the table and a tray of homemade brownies came out of the oven. You could watch them make the next batch of homemade treats in a large copper kettle, ingredient by ingredient.
The flavor of the day today was fresh strawberry. The custard had a good amount of strawberry slices, and a nice fresh flavor. On our previous visit we sampled both regular and 'dark' hot fudge toppings, and their homemade apple crisp.
We have seen, but not yet tried, their $5.50 banana split with 3 scoops of ice cream and choice of 2 toppings. It looked very large.
Prices are reasonable, at $2.50 for a 'regular' which was actually a pretty large portion, and about $5 for the sundaes-built-for-2.
The chocolate selection was excellent, with many of the trendy flavors like Mayan truffle (Mexican chocolate), Green Tea Truffle, and Taj Mahal truffle (curry). The flavors were intense and strong, rather than the subtle essence of flavor in something like a Miel chocolate (which focuses more on intense chocolate). Thank you.
Zwahlen's is in Audubon, about 10 minutes from KofP Mall. Quick directions are 202S to 422W to Trooper Road, about 1 1/2 miles left at the large Wawa.
