[ Zucca Trattoria - Summerlicious ]

so what brings me to Zucca? the promise of fresh-made pasta & a very intriguing summerlicious $20 prix fixe menu, offering a promising selection of 3 appetizers, 4 pastas, & 2 desserts ..
the maitre d' graciously pulled the table out as we were seated .. a waitress offered us water immediately after sitting down .. we did not feel rushed to make our dinner selections, and yet another waiter took our order .. so that's three different people that we had interacted with already .. the service was fantastic -- attentive without being overbearing ..
we were served pre-appetizers - thin pizza slices made of mashed/shredded potato like a dense rosti, & baked/pan-fried and lightly seasoned .. slightly crispy yet soft inside ..
to officially start, i had the "insalata di barbietole ed orzo" - salad of roasted beets & barley, ricotta salata cheese .. delicately flavoured beet & barley, contrasting textures, balanced with a medium cheese ..
my S.O.'s "bruschetta ai fichi freschi" - bruschetta of fresh purple figs & toma cheese, came as yet another surprise .. instead of plain tomato-onion-bruschetta, we were given crunchy oven-toasted bread, topped with light herbs, spread with mildly sweet fig & topped a light cheese ..
my eyes lit up at the "strangozzi ai porcini con le seppie" - porcini mushroom-flavoured noodles with calamari, grape tomatoes, white wine, extra virgin olive oil .. the calamari was tender, grape tomatoes tart & juicy, the rapini(?) lightly bitter, each mouthful a different taste depending on which ingredient you picked up .. i was hoping for mushroom flavours in the noodle, but had difficulty locating it ..
my S.O. ordered the "fusilli con cavolfiore e pangrattato" - fusilli in cauliflower sauce with parma prosciutto, toasted breadcrumbs, pecorino cheese .. i was absolutely blown away with this dish .. buyer be warned, this is for garlic lovers .. the first forkful of fusilli exploded with crunch from the toasted breadcrumbs .. harder-than-al dente fusilli balanced the crunchiness of the breadcrumbs .. the garlic & proscuitto provided a full flavour to the dish ..
i ordered the "torta di fragole e mascarpone" - layered spongecake with moscato wine, local strawberries & lemon mascarpone, zabaione sauce .. the cake layer at the soaked with the moscato wine & strawberry flavours with layers of light mascarpone in between ..
my S.O. finished her meal with the "meringata di ciliegie" - chilled cherry cream with meringue, with purple fig & pinenut sauce .. the hard meringue in your mouth .. the fig suace recalled our appetizer, leaving us recollecting the beginning of our evening ..
as an afterthought, my SO's dishes were tied together with themes of fig and crunch .. a good set of dishes to choose for an evening ..
we also found out they have an on-going Zuccalicious promotion, offering a choice of appetizer, pasta, & dessert for $22 on Sun/Mon/Tues .. the menu changes frequently, accounting for seasonal ingredients ..
fantastic value, creative food, & excellent service (i'm not typically a stickler for service) will definitely keep us coming back .. make those summerlicious reservations NOW!!
