I finally decided to head out to Zubie's Chicken Coop in Newport Beach after finding out about this place a few months ago. I was expecting a hole-in-the-wall type of shack like Super Pollo, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a nice sit-down type of environment.
Not many chicken items on the menu given the name of the restaurant, but I figured I would start with the broasted chicken and go from there.
Oh my goodness! That was some fantastic broasted chicken. I'm not even sure if I've ever had real broasted chicken before because I've never had chicken taste this good. The chicken skin was perfectly crisp, without being overcooked crunchy, but not even the slightest bit chewy.
The chicken meat was very tender and good, with the breast meat just slightly dry, but I expect that from breast meat. Side of mash potatoes and green beans were good, too.
Half a chicken (4 pieces) of this divine chicken for $7.95 was an absolute deal. I don't know if their chicken is like this all the time, or we got a perfectly fresh batch of chicken, but that was a great first impression for me.
After such a positive experience, I hope to try Zubie's Dry Dock in Huntington Beach sometime soon.
If anyone knows of any other fantastic chicken suggestion places in OC, please let us know. I do already know of the Knotts restaurant near the amusement park, and have made note of the many LA county suggestions like Dinah's Fried Chicken, Amber's Broasted Chicken, Honey's Kettle Fried Chicken, and of course, Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles.
The recommended list of good chicken places is never long enough for me. :-)
