Zankou - what's the big deal?

pablo | Jul 8, 2005 05:11 PM

At the risk of inciting major controversy on the board, I have to ask: What's so great about Zankou Chicken? After reading numerous drool-inducing tributes here on the board, I had my first taste yesterday at their Sepulved location. Overall impression was good, but nothing compared to what I was expecting.

I ordered the light chicken plate. Service was fast and efficient. The price was right. The food was hot and fresh, but...

- Chicken was very bland and kind of mealy (not horrible, but not the super-succulent intensely flavored bird I was expecting).

- Garlic sauce was amazing (slapping this on the chicken made up for much of the blandness)

- Tomato/radish salad was bland, tomatoes flavorless

- Hummous was superb. If the chicken were this good, the title of my post would be different

So Zankou fans, did I order the wrong plate? Was this just an off day? Is this pretty much what I should have expected?
