yunggui garden - yunnan food

modernist | Aug 21, 200506:31 PM

tried to go to malan noodles but it has moved to rowland heights. (see next post on board for more details)

ordered yunnanese chicken soup, pretty tasty but noticeable msg flavor actually every dish was quite salty and a noticeable msg presence. normally you can ask them to not add msg but for soupy items its probably not possible.

the soup had hunks of chicken, the orange small juju fruits, dried dates, ginger and other herbs

we also had guoqiomixian "crossing bridge noodles" i actually didnt want to get this but its their "signature" noodle dish. i personally find it a bit bland whenever i order it. the pickled veggies were a bit weak. a clear salty broth (again msg heavy) spaghetti thickness rice noodles with pea spouts, bean sprouts, slices of pork.

we had wonton noodles too. proabably about 15 wontons. quite sizeable again with a tasteless soup and dou miao (pea sprouts).

next was spicy fried dry beef. an interesting dish. prosciutto thickness sliced dry beef in about 1 inch by 2 inches fried with chilis. almost tasting like a sort of beef bacon, but a fairly lean cut.

and finally we had a cold appetizer dish. we had celery, cucumber and celery leaves.

total bill for three people: 30 dollars.

i think our main problem was getting too many soupy dishes that had a strong msg presence.
