Yucatasia updates?

Anyone else been to Yucatasia lately?

Day's menu -

I stopped by there Sunday afternoon as part of my stroll to try to find the rumored third Yucatec place (besides El Maya Yucatan) on this stretch of Mission. Came up empty on that hunt, but got an eyeful at Yucatasia.

The place was jammed to the rafters by Mayan males, and at 1:30pm, there were seven people ahead of me in line trying to order at the cashier. The counter that used to be in the front was gone to make more room for tables and chairs. Also, the menu has dropped the few Vietnamese dishes it had. I asked the woman taking orders and she said they're too busy cooking Yucatecan food to bother with those. I commented on how busy it was, and she said that it's even crazier weekdays from 11am to 3pm. With the screen gone that used to block the line of sight into the kitchen, it was most entertaining to see the flurry of activity behind the scenes. The kitchen is as overrun and chaotic looking as ever, but now with good reason judging from the popularity of the place. However, now the staff don't shout at each other the same way, or maybe I couldn't hear a raised voice over the din inside the restaurant.

With no where to sit, I ordered frijol con puerco to go ($7). I had a bit of a wait as the kitchen was backed up on handmade tortillas. Mine probably suffered because of this, since they were too wet, doughy and undercooked. The frijol con puerco had a much meatier flavor to the stock and more fat glistening on the surface. Three chunks of pork belly were mostly fat with little lean. The broth was thinner and my portion had a relatively small amount of black beans. The beans were a little stiff and hadn't hit the creamy point yet.

This is only the third time I've had this dish. The beans at the closed El Rey Pakal were tastier. The meat and tortillas were much better in the dish at Chichen Itza. That's not to say that this was bad, just that I'd try something else from the menu before ordering this again.

What do 'hounds recommend now?

Walking over to El Maya Yucatan a few minutes later, one couldn't help but notice that it was less than half full, while Yucatasia was bursting at the seams on a "non-busy" day.
