I had a really nice rendition of XLB (aka, soup dumplings) at one of the pods in downtown Portland, called Asian Station on the corner of SW 10th and Alder. The menu is definitely pan-Asian, serving Malaysian roti, Vietnamese banh mi and there was even talk about adding sushi to the menu. However, the star of the menu is arguably their xiao long bao, listed on the menu as Shanghai mini dumplings.
Their website (www.asianstationcafe.com) shows a set of four, but one order actually contains eight. Since it is a pod, you have to make do with the outdoor setting. My strategy is to pour the vinegar (which is served in one of those little 1.5oz condiment cups) over the daikon, then use the cup to house a dumpling while I puncture it and slurp the soup out.
After a while, the ambient temperature cooled the dumplings to the point where one could actually place the whole thing in your mouth and bite it without fear of the liquid scaling the insides of your cheeks.
