Wirin Thai in Venice just rocked my world

Wanshu | Jun 23, 200512:33 AM

Hey 'Hounders...

I don't know if it was a fluke or what, but tonight I ordered takeout from Wirin Thai on Lincoln (at Venice Bl) and got a dish that blew me away. I didn't have a menu handy, so I called up and ordered "Tom Yum with seafood". I don't know if this is even something on their menu, specifically, but BINGO!

I came home to open a deliciously fragrant soup with lots of lemon grass and chunks of galanga... and MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF HIGH-QUALITY SEA FOOD! Not just two little frozen shrimp and a rubbery scallop like, frankly, I have come to expect from... everywhere. There were hunks of squid, mussels in the shell, scallops, large shrimp and hunks of real king crab leg still in the shell, ripe fer pickin'. The broth was delicious and actually tasted like real Tom Yum, not a paste (which is not necessarily bad, but this was just better).

I called them up to just say thanks and that it was superb. I hope it wasn't a fluke (extra seafood delivery, or giving me the leftovers of what they cooked for the staff or something).

The other dishes I ordered were Pad Thai... always good at Wirin, but not mind-blowing... and Vegetable Green Curry with Tofu - another request I made up, not having a menu. This was good, too, though a little salty and not spicy enough.

Just thought I'd share. If you order, call ahead - everything's cooked to order, so it takes a while.

Eat well!
