Four of us had dinner at the Red Tomato on Friday night as they were putting Fred's Not Here Winterlicious overflow downstairs. I had the vegetarian potstickers with wow wow chili sauce, grilled sirloin steak with baby bok choy (and mashed potatoes), and the warm cranberry & raisin bread pudding. There were four potstickers that came with the chili sauce. I found them a bit overcooked as the wrapper was hard and crispy, but the sauce was amazing. I asked for the steak medium-rare, but it came more like medium. The spices were nice though and it sat on mashed potatoes & bok choy in a thin gravy, which helped a bit. The best course was the dessert. I really enjoyed the bread pudding along with the coconut ice cream and white chocolate sabayon (of which there wasn't enough of). Other dishes that were ordered were the coconut shrimp w/ spring rolls, romaine salad w/ radicchio, pan roasted filet of sole, pad thai, indo jerk linguine w/ tandoori chicken, and sorbet of mango, rasberry and lime. The coconut shrimp certainly smelled lovely, the pad thai was delared to be delicious, and the taste of the linguine I had was impressive. Overall, it was a pleasant dinner with friends. The space was very small though, everyone was bumping their hips on the other tables and they really need to find room to hang big, bulky winter jackets. Plus the fact that our table was beside the waitress station and in front of the big stone oven made it a bit awkward, but not terribly unpleasant.
Would we go again? Probably not. It's not that we hated everything, but there are so many other places to try and at least we've been there once.
