Windy City hound revisits Canton

shopgirl | Dec 27, 200503:05 PM

Grew up and was visiting Canton over the holidays. Saw a few other posts, but thought I'd toss in my 2cents for what it's worth:

Steaks: Baker's strip steak hands down. The steaks are perfectly seasoned here. The place has been around forever and despite changing ownership a few years ago, I am told the chef took over, so things are as good as always.

Italian & Pizza: Angelo's

Burgers & beer: Mulligan's Pub

Favorite all around: Cite Grille, although I hear it is closing at the end of the year. Talk is that new ownership may keep it open, but nothing firm yet. I hope it stays open!

Newer Spots: Peter Shears and The Canton Club. Peter Shear's menu was rather inventive (for Canton) and food good on a past visit. My recent visit included the recently re-opened Canton Club. The food was good, wine selection excellent (and really reasonable) but the service was a little quirky. We had 2 waitstaff for our meal, but their efforts were somewhat disconnected (as in waiter 2 had no idea if waiter 1 had taken our appetizer order yet and this happened on multiple occasion). Nice place for a special lunch or dinner tho.

Traditional upscale: Bender's Tavern is a Canton classic in Canton, solid steaks but not as good as Baker's IMO.

Chinese: Ricky Ly's

Ice Cream: Milk & Honey for their cones and Taggart's for the Bittner. I hear Chubby's is good too, but haven't yet been.

Old School: Heggy's on Tuscarawas for the footlong dog and fries. And chocolates of course.
