Wildfish, Newport - very very good

torta basilica | Feb 4, 2006 10:33 AM

Tried to get last minute resvs here, but they were 'fully committed' for another 2 hours, so decided to take our chances & see if we could find seats at the bar. The place was packed @ 7:30 on a Friday night - big bar without an empty seat, other long standing tables were full, finally found 2 seats at the oyster bar. A hostess immediately came up, asked if we were eating dinner & asked if we'd like to sit at one of the booths for 2 off the bar. Sure - she found one & we were quite comfortable - there's about 10 of these - great, but loud - this place is really loud, but in a good way. Lots of fresh oyster specials & seafood platters, but we decided on: 1 Caesar - excellent with big parmesan curls & anchovy on the side; warm goat cheese & wild mushroom salad - excellent - on lots of arugula, very tart vinigrette, but goat cheese was fairly mild - really liked this salad! Totally delicious warm bread - tried to keep ourselves from eating the entire 1/2 loaf! We split the halibut special, which was a huge piece of halibut, with a crab, horseradish & pistachio crust. They split it for us & really enjoyed it - the topping somewhat overwhelmed the fish & I would prefer it plain the next time, but still very good. All sides are separate & we were told large enough to share - wanted to try the truffled mac n cheese, but not hungry enough. Passed on dessert too - will definitely return - not a quiet, intimate dinner, but fun, good food & excellent service. There's also a patio bar off the side that looked nice & a little quieter - they had seated some larger groups for dinner out there. Think we'll try it next time on a week night.
