In my eternal quest for the perfect Chupe de
Camarones, one that is silken to the palate, gorgeous to look at and tummy happy from the number and texture of shrimp thats in the bowl - we tried El Rocoto (1356 W.Artesia Blvd. Gardena, 90248, 310-768-8768) next to the 99 market so you can walk off the lunch by engaging in a big shop.
This restaurant was recommended to us by a Peruvian American friend who has nixed all El Pollo Inkas as 'fast food'. We also had Ocopa Arequepino (I guess from Arequipo where I thought they spent their days eating roast guinea pig) - anyhow it was an interesting walnut/shrimp sauce (I prefer the Papa a la Huancaina potatoes with the cheese sauce). Back to the Chupe - it was extraordinary. My partner had Picante de Mariscos - packed with shrimp, squid, octopus, scallops, delicious. Great new find. Washed down with chicha morada (Peruvian punch).
