Among the local winners in this year's Good Food Awards is Far West Cider for its Orchard Blend #1 cider. Orchard Blend is quite fruity with almost 2% RS. I found it very approachable and the cidermaster said that it's a good bridge for those just starting to appreciate cider.

I also tried two others that were drier and a had a bit more funk and acidity that made them more interesting. The apples are homegrown at Chinchiolo Family Farms in the San Joaquin Valley. Some may recognize that name from the cherries and apples sold direct at farmers markets and Bi-Rite. The cidery is in Richmond and has a tasting room. Bottles and growlers can be purchased there.
