Wei Lee Chinese Food & Donuts, SF

Melanie Wong | Jul 12, 200509:34 PM

The former donut shop on the corner of Clement and 8th is sporting new signage and a new name, Wei Lee Chinese Food & Donuts. I was turned on to it by one of my aunties who brought us a roast duck from here.

On Sunday I had a chance to stop by myself on the Chinese grocery shopping rounds. It looks like a steam table with Chinese food and a barbecue station have been added near the door and front window. In the rear, there's a separate counter and an overhead menu still offering donuts, Polish sausages, etc.

I bought a roast duck, $9.50, and some bitter melon stir-fried with chicken from the steam table. The stir-fry had too much blobby cornstarch. The duck was good again, evenly roasted and well-rendered. The spicing is pretty assertive and not as refined as say Noriega's Cheung Hing. I'd put the style in between New Moon's heavy sweet spicing and Cheung Hing. I noticed that the plastic shopping back bore the logo of Wing Lee, the take-out place a couple blocks down the street. The duck is very much like Wing Lee's roasting, so perhaps there is a connection.
