Weekend in Nashville - Trip Report

Had a great visit in Nashville this weekend - was down from NYC and visiting a friend who just moved from here to there. I didn't think it was possible to have 3 meals in a row with mac and cheese and slow cooked green beans, but I'm happy to report that yes it is possible. I have lived in the Northeast all my life but there is something about Southern food that I can't get enough of.

Here's where we ate:

Friday lunch - Bread & Co
For a city that has a lot, NYC doesn't have a lot of these kind of sandwich shops. We made a quick trip out for lunch (both of us actually work for the same company so it was technically a work from home day). I did a make your own sandwich but my ingredients didn't work very well together which was totally my fault though I liked the blue cheese and bacon potato salad and edamame succotash that I picked for the sides. The fruit tea was good too - never had that before.

Friday dinner - Margot's
I really like this place. I always like finding restaurants like this when I travel since they source from their local farms. My friend started with the gazpacho with crab meat and I had the squash blossoms with goat cheese which were amazing. For mains, she had the pastured sirloin which was very good and enormous and I had the chicken breast with cornbread stuffing. I rarely get chicken when I go to restaurants like this since there are usually more creative options to pick from, but I'm glad I did. The chicken was juicy and well seasoned and came with a spinach salad with bacon dressing and that was fantastic too. For dessert we had the special which was a black forest cake - which was good and the fresh cherries were a really nice touch - but I think I should have gotten the lemon cormeal cake instead.

Saturday brunch - Loveless
I was a litle worried it wouldn't live up to the hype but we endured the hour and forty-five minute wait and it was worth it. I got the country fried steak with mac and cheese and slow cooked green beans (this will be a pattern for me) and it was delicious. My friend focused on the eggs and bacon. The biscuits were incredible, especially with the blackberry preserves. I was tempted to buy the biscuit mix from the store (I did fall prey to a jar of the blackberry preserves) but I had a feeling my attempt to re-create it at home wasn't going to yield the same results so I left well enough alone.

Saturday dinner - Jack's BBQ
We originally intended to go to Martin's in Nolensville but after our Loveless food coma, we took a long nap and got our act together too late to get out to Martin's in time. We were planning to go check out some country music (we're in Nashville so why not, right?!) so we decided to go to Jack's which seemed to get some decent play on the boards here. We had a great meal - pulled pork for me, ribs for my friend - both very good. Of course I had mac and cheese and green beans for my sides.

Sunday lunch - Monell's
Had to make sure we went here, my friend has been living in Nashville for just a few months now and hadn't been yet. I love this place. We started with cole slaw, vinegary cucumbers and broccoli in a white sauce then moved on to the main event - fried chicken. As good as I thought it would be based on all the recs on the boards. Their mac and cheese and green beans were so good, as was the corn casserole (I think that's what it's called - whatever it is there must be crack in it because I could eat it forever). The chicken was really tender and juicy and the skin was super crisp. Oh and the sweet tea. I love it. As an NYer, the family style was a little different to get used to since I'm forbidden as a city resident to speak to strangers :) but we sat with a really nice group of people and it was a lot of fun.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend of eating. I can't wait to visit my friend again - Monell's alone is going to haunt my dreams.
