How are waiters assured of getting their tips when the diner pays by credit card?
When you give the waiter your credit card to pay for your meal, it is run through the machine and the waiter brings back a printed bill showing the amount of the meal, with a line underneath where you add the tip. The amount of the meal is the amount transmitted to the credit card company.
A few times, I've observed that my monthly statement shows the amount of the bill but NOT the total amount I indicated, i.e. meal plus tip. In other words, the waiter appears to have gotten stiffed.
How can waiters be assured of getting their tips if you pay by credit card? I think I am going to start leaving my tip in cash.
