Last night I attended a birthday party at The Vine in Fremont's Niles district. A balmy evening, the patio out back was packed. My friends had arrived early to take in the daily happy hour for an appetizer round. They had a carafe of Rockwall Zinfandel on the table that was tasty.
But I caught up quickly ordering the Vine Bacon Burger, $14, a half-pound pork and beef blended patty with thick cut crisp bacon, pepperjack cheese, bitter greens and tomato on a toasted ciabatta roll. It came out medium-rare as ordered, and very juicy. Side salad included with the plate was mostly baby mustards in a creamy balsamic dressing. I was happy with my choice.
I also tried a delicious Vegetarian risotto that featured roast squash and lots of cheese. The arborio rice had a firm bite, and much better than I expected. I tasted the Cuban panino that was fine but like most Cuban sandwiches around here the bread's not quite right. To celebrate the birthday girl, the Berry and tawny Port trifle came out with a lit candle.
A fun and lively evening and the service staff managed to keep up with our party of eight, snapping photos on request and making our time around the fire pit a celebration even on a busy night. Other opinions of The Vine?
