vaccuvin corks

Dbird | May 22, 2003 09:42 PM

The other evening I put a vaccuvin cork in a newly opened bottle of san pellegrino that I placed beside my bed. In the night I got up to take a drink. Foulest water I ever tasted, and I haven't used one of the corks in wine since. I shudder to think of the bottles I've ruined, unwittingly. Is there any way to purge the odors and flavors from those rubber corks without adding new ones (I hesitate to try vinegar, baking soda)? I've been dissuaded from thinking that it does any good to pump out the air, but the corks are convenient.
