unknown food finds

a couple of years ago after reading "stalking the wild asparagus" by euell gibbons i started wondering what plants and flowers in my backyard and elsewhere were eatable. i had a bit of concern about tasting something that would make me ill, but since i couldn't ever remember a local news story about about anyone getting sick from eating anything other than bad restaurant food, i figured what the hell. through trial and error i've discovered several types of "wild" seasonal plant leaves and a berry fit to be eaten. i generally mix them with rice, garlic, hot chilis and olive oil for a very delicious meal every morning. i also discovered that home grown tomato plant leaves are tasty too.

when you think about it, what we eat has been decided for us by someone else: beef, beets, bread, carrots, chicken, etc, etc. so my question is what have foodstuff have YOU discovered for yourself.

by the way, i never got ill from any of my experimenting.
