Union Square Cafe appalling reception

Went to USC for lunch today, having booked online two weeks ago. When making the booking I asked not to be sat anywhere near the bar. Upon arrival, I was offerred a table upstairs in a space four feet wide or to sit side by side in a banquette (I was there for a business lunch) in the room just adjacent to the bar! At the time (12:30) there were around eight empy tables in the main room but I was told they had been "promised." I was told we could come back in forty five minutes, they would have a table for us then! We left without receiving an apology.

Has anyone else ever received this kind of treatment? Is it best not to use Open Table as a booking tool? I always liked USC, is this attitude indicative of a top rated success contributing to a bad attitude?
