My husband and I received a GC to Melt, so we had dinner there last Sunday night. There was only one other occupied table when we arrived at 7:30pm. I tried to order a cocktail, but the waiter said he hadn't prepared the pear puree. I offered to wait for him to do so, but he implied that he wouldn't be doing it all. So we ordered a bottle of red. Five minutes later (empty restaurant) he tells us that they're out of that bottle. We order a second bottle, he quips, "Third time's a charm."
The food: I had the most rubbery, tasteless octopus salad I have ever tasted. My husband has an overcooked, unseasoned slab of portabello mushroom. When I politely tell the waiter why I didn't eat the octopus, he replies, "It's octopus. That's the way it tastes."
For entree, I had a special shell steak with some cognac cream sauce. The steak was perfect: enormous and tender and exactly medium.
Husband had pork tenderloin, nothing special.
As the restaurant became more crowded, the service actually got better. The simple cheesecake was good. My husband ordered a 5yr old port, but the waiter gave him the 20yr old port.
Overall, I would never spend my money at a restaurant with such uninspired food, and an attitude to match.
And, believe it or not, I'm usually not picky!
Having dinner with my dad next week, and I think we'll go back to Sorrel (I'm a Prospect Heights res)
