In spite of the warnings of one of my most reliable Houndly mentors, a group of four of us from my office sought out Pizza d'Oro for lunch yesterday.
My mentor had told me they were hit-or-miss -- good one day, bad another. But we are always looking for new lunch spots near the office, and there's no reliable Italian in our Garden Grove neighborhood which straddles Little Saigon and K-town.
We got to Pizza d'Oro and I'd planned to order pizza from the menu. But their all-you-can-eat lunch buffet ($5.75 including drink) was in full swing and included three pizza choices so we opted for that.
The other choices were spaghetti, a separate dish of sauce and meatballs, chicken cacciatore, roasted potatoes, garlic bread and some vegetable (I think).
The spaghetti and chicken were good, standard, red-table cloth Neapolitan fare. The chicken was sweetish - almost like barbecued -- juicy and tender. The potatoes were tasty and so was the pizza -- medium crust, tasty sauce, modest toppings (which is how I like it). The turnover is fast enough that the pizza was warm and fresh.
A destination restaurant? Hardly. But if you're in the neighborhood and have a bunch of hungry people to feed, give it a try!
