I need some help understanding Indian/Pakistani food

Howard-2 | Jan 22, 2005 05:10 PM

I stopped by a small Indian/Pakistani restaurant today and unfortunately the 2 women running it didn't seem to speak much english.

I asked what was in each of about the different sweets they had, and the answewr always came back "milk, sugar, whipping cream" and so on. I was unable to get a sense of what distinguished one from another.

Can anyone point me to a good web site that will give me pictures and ingredient lists?

Also, this restaurant had a number of dishes I've never encountered before in Indian restaurants, such as chicken jalfrezzi, karahi chicken, kashmiri josh, memon dal, etc. Can someone tell me where I can find a listing of dishes of this sort (region etc) and some kind of commentary on them, such as a list of ingredients?
