Ubol's Thai disaster

Hungry Esteban | Aug 6, 2005 10:48 PM

I remember Ubol's from a few years ago as an excellent Thai standby on Steinway Street in Astoria. Things have gone terribly wrong since then. We started with the Tom Kha Gai, which consisted of midly flavored coconut milk with over-cooked pieces of chicken in it. My crispy duck was burned and the pieces of duck were easy to crack in half. The waitress arrogantly claimed that the customers like it that way. I guess that Ubol's customers like their duck reduced to cinders. My wife had a mixed seafood dish that was overcooked--rubbery shrimps, squid and mussels--and the sauce was a sweet and gloppy mass that lacked flavor. The Pad Thai was awful--the noodles were cloying and reminded me of a sweetened tomato sauce with some spices in it. I nearly always find something charitable to say about my meal but the best part of the meal at Ubol's was leaving the restaurant. What a shame.
