I was checking out the January 2006 issue of Dancyu magazine from Japan, and this month's big feature is "How to walk through Tsukiji". It's packed with information and reviews, including a map of all the vendor stalls at Tsukiji, color coded with the main specialty of all the shops. In the magazine, they mentioned that the big fish market is planning to move to a new space sometime after 2010 (I think 2012 was the date I saw) to a bigger and more visitor-friendly space, which will house a museum, and food court and much more. I can't imagine what kind of undertaking it will be to move an operation as enormous as the Tsukiji market. The Fulton fish market moved this year to the Bronx, and that's miniscule in comparison. Anyway, this was somewhat of a surprise to me, since that was the first I heard about the plan. I can see the yen signs over the heads of the developers who have a stake in all that property adjacent to the Ginza area.
