Hi Folks: On a road trip this past week from my home on Vancouver Island to southern California I stopped at a few places in the Pac NW. Not too many as I was high-tailing it to my destination near Joshua Tree National Park.
On the way down I ate at Jackson Creek Pizza in Medford. Good pizza. I had the Ashland, which had fresh garlic, tomatoes, olives, and other things I like on a pizza. I really like the crust. Nice amount of char, and crispy. It had obviously been cooked in a good hot oven. I think this place deserves the recommendations it gets. I also liked that it seemed like a real locals place. There were three gentleman sitting on barstools watching a hockey game who looked very much at home there.
On my way back I stopped in Grant's Pass. I was starving as it was 3 pm and I had not yet eaten anything that day (had started my day in Eureka followed by a hike in the Redwoods). I had not idea where to go. I stopped in a mall to get my bearings and noticed a place called "the Vine." I had no expectations going in but ended up quite enjoying my meal there. I had pork ribs with a blackberry-BBQ sauce. The ribs themselves did not have sauce on them so I could control how much sauce I wanted to add. They were tender, but not too tender (i.e. not "rib jello). Still had a good chew to them. I also enjoyed the garlic mashed potatoes that came with the meal. The only low point was the salad, which featured greens that were obviously not that fresh or local and had a slightly styrofoamy texture. Nonetheless, i enjoyed the friendly service and the good meat'n'potatoes. I also had a glass of Rogue Valley wine and was impressed that several local wineries were featured on the wine list.
I have posted other details of my trip on the Portland page and will also be posting on the Bay Area and California pages.
