I’m back from a week in the DFW area. My sister and I were supposed to go on a cruise on the Carnival Triumph, where my nephew was a musician. Then, the ship spent a week adrift at sea, nephew went back to Missouri and that was that! Since I had a no refund plane ticket, sis decided she’d do a stay-cation with me visiting. So, off to Denton I went.
We had no real plans, except we signed up for a couple of cooking classes at two different Central Market locations. We used mostly Chowhound advice to find some tasty eats during the week. We seem to have been a little meat-centric, but it was all good!
After a first-day shopping expedition, we made our way to MiDia From Scratch in Grapevine. Awesome sangria. I had the duck carnita tacos, and found them very tasty. I especially liked the pickled vegetable toppings. Sis had the quail and didn’t much care for it. I liked it better than she did. Great service. We would definitely go back.
A knife-skills class took us over to Plano. We hit Whiskey Cake to kill some time with late afternoon drinks and snacks before the class. Fried green tomatoes, roasted Shisheido peppers and a pulled pork Bahn Mi style sandwich were all very good. We determined to try the peppers at home. The class was fun and embarrassing. Just after the instructor told me I was doing great, I cut the tip end of my thumb off!
We did a bit of cooking at home, making dinner for some friends. A night or two of just snacks/wine/beer on the patio and a walk down to Beth Marie’s for ice cream. I enjoyed shopping at the new little organic market in Denton and at Central Market. I love the salted caramel cookies I bought at Central Market. I had them in my bag on the plane and couldn’t stop eating them.
We spent the last day in a 5 hour bread class at the FW Central Market. The class was SO much fun. Wonderful instructors (the cooking school manager and the manager of their bread bakery). After the class, we headed to Tim Love’s Woodshed. It was a gorgeous day, perfect for sitting outside. We had the pork ribs, red fish enpapillote, Mexican corn and potato salad. All were very, very good, but we especially loved the corn. It was a great, fun ending for my week in Texas.
Every time I visit, I come home with a new list of places to try along with the ones we didn’t make time for. Y'all sure offer up some great ideas and helpful info.
