Went to the just-opened Tre Merli Bistro last night (Where W10th St, oddly, crosses W 4th St. near 7th Ave.) Nothing fancy: paninni, 6 or so pasta dishes; no entree over $14. But it's a pretty and lively joint own by the folks at Soho's Barolo and I Tre Merli. I had a fine parpadelle in mushroom/tomato sauce ($9) and an appetizer of grill vegetables. ($6). My wife had gnocchi in a pesto sauce that she thought was soggy. Portions are small, which is the major reason they can do an italian steak frites for $14. There's a small bar and an odd wine list: half $25-$35 bottles; half $150-and-up bottles. Worth a stop if you're in that neighborhood. Service was pretty good for a place that's only been open a week. 183 W. 10th St.
