Old Town Mexican Cafe - San Diego

I haven't been there in a couple of years, but a bunch of us hauled off to Old Town Mex for a birthday dinner last night. I'd forgotten how loud the place can be, but if the food and drink are good, I can live with "loud". Well, we got half way there. General consensus on drinks was a thumbs up. They had an excellent selection of tequilas, and some very creative mixed drinks. Our choice of tequila was El Tesoro reposado, and it was smooth and tasty. Service was very good, especially considering how busy it was. The food was another story. We requested bleu cheese dressing on our salads, and whatever was on those greens was only reminiscent of bleu cheese. I think. What I do know is I abandoned the salad after three bites ("is this bleu cheese?" *chewing* "it kind of tastes like bleu cheese" *more chewing* "I'm not sure this is even salad dressing" *final chewing*). For the main course, I ordered chicken verde enchiladas and rice. The tortillas were dry, the inside didn't have enough verde sauce, and the chicken was rather tasteless. Very disappointing. The guacamole on Jim's carne asada tasted bad - all it takes is one bad spot on one avocado to taint the stuff, and that's what it tasted like. Others at the table weren't impressed with their meals either, and I wasn't brave enough to request any tastes.

I realize this place's specialty was, and maybe still is, carnitas, and if I ever go back, that's probably what I'll order. With so many other places to have good Mexican food, I can't imagine going back any time soon.
