Tokyo Sushi Post 4.14 Hashiguchi

IanW | Apr 27, 201803:16 PM

My first time back in Tokyo since 2000. Back then I was just a 23 year old kid with no idea what to get in Tokyo (I ate Thai, Italian, Tempura and Kaiten-Sushi) so this time I wanted to be prepared. The concierge staff at Hotel Okura (which were fantastic) got us reservations at Hashiguchi (which was my second choice after Yoshitake) and lunch at Ginza Iwa. Luckily I had done my homework on what Hashiguchi looked like from the outside because the cab driver almost passed it. Once inside we were welcomed to sushi bar by Hashiguchi-san's wife. Even though their English was very limited they were both very welcoming. The other six patrons were Japanese speakers. Not sure if he only does two seating a night but it appeared that our 7:00pm seating was the last of the evening as we were out of there well after 9:30 and no additional patrons arrived. We were given two options Sushi Only or Sashimi and Sushi. We chose the Sushi only(20,000 yen) option based on reviews here and that turned out to be more than enough. I appreciated the wide variety of neta (5 Different Types of Clam, 3 Different types of squid), the subtle shari, and the luscious O-toro. He did a great job explaining each piece best he could and we never felt that we were treated different than the Japanese patrons. My favorite moment is when he pointed to my wife and said boss? to which I nodded yes and laughed. He then points at his wife and says boss. My wife wasn't a huge fan of the shellfish texture but I thought the variety of textures added to overall meal and helped make it less monotonous. Of course his knife work and nigiri construction was flawless. Would highly recommend and was certainly the best sushi meal of my life.
