Today's Eats: Marriott, Bacco, Cafe Beignet, Bayona

Today was a much better eating day!

Started out with breakfast at the Marriott. Unremarkable -- your basic hotel buffet -- but I thought pretty decent of its kind. Service was friendly, and the buffet included smoked salmon and capers and onions, which ALWAYS works for me.

Lunc got a little more complicated. We'd planned on Petunia's, but there was a large loud crowd and a line out the door. So we moved on, looked at the Cafe Beignet on Royal Street (my Mom objected to the uncleared tables), considered Acme (again, lines out the door), started to get discouraged, and then came across Bacco, with plenty of seats, and decided to splurge. We had an excellent meal there, two appetizers each. I started with the steamed mussels with pancetta and tomatoes (a nice peppery vermouth sauce) and finished up with the truffled egg (yummilicious if you're a soft-cooked egg fan). My Mom had the Mista Salad and a sweet potato and sausage soup. Technically it's an Italian place, but it had a lot of other flavor going on. Very nice.

Ultimately, though, I had to get a Beignet, so I got one at the Cafe Beignet on Bourbon Street. Yum.

Then, as if we hadn't eaten enough already, we went to Bayona for dinner, and had another delicious meal. Not particularly New Orleans in flavor or influence, but really really good. I had the seared scallops with lentils and cardamom rice (a dish I would order again in a heartbeat), followed by a quail dish that was also very good. My mother's sweatbreads were outstanding.

Tomorrow, meals are not entirely within our control. We'll see.
