I'd like to know what other people do about mediocre service. Recently, in SF, we had a meal at a neighborhood ethnic restaurant. Not fast food but not pricey either-- $35 for two. The server wasn't surly but certainly not friendly and was just barely polite. Water glasses weren't refilled, dishes weren't cleared, check slapped on the table and then not retrieved for 10 minutes despite efforts to attract attention of server. Obviously (food wasn't that great either), we won't go back but what do we tip? We just weren't in the mood to verbally register a complaint. We generally tip 15% for "average" service and 20% for good. If we tip less than 10% do they just think we're cheap? Should we not tip at all? Share your solutions please. Thanks!
